Craigslist, wrong calls and me

I have the worst luck when it comes to getting wrong calls on my phone. Why do I say that? It started a few weeks ago with a phone call - "I'm calling to ask about the Nissan altima you have on sale". I replied saying wrong number yada yada etc. After the third call like this, I finally asked them where they found the ad and it turned out to be Craigslist. One google search later I found the ad listing my number, probably a typo. Contacted them via Cragislist and asked them to correct it. End of story, right?

Two days later, I got ANOTHER call, here is how it went.
Caller: Maam, Im calling about the toyota four runner for sale
Me: You mean the Altima, that was a mistake in the ad. I am not the seller and it has been corrected in the ad online.
Caller: Is your number 602-*******? That's what's on there..
Me:ARGGH

Another google search, and I find a DIFFERENT Craigslist ad in another city, listing my number. What are the chances of this happening to the same person in one week?. This time I found the phone number of the poster, it was on an older ad for the same car. I called him,

Me:Hi, you have put my number in your car ad. Could you correct it please?
Poster: Oh I'm so sorry, how do I do that?
Me: You need to change the ad, only you can do that since you posted it.
Him: How do I correct it?
Me: I'll email you the URL, what's your email address?
Him:Whats URL?
Me: Sigh..never mind, I'll just tell people to call you when they call me.. Good luck selling your car!

I flagged the post and asked several friends to flag too but it took a while to disappear from the site. Meanwhile, I answered a lot of calls about his car and gave people the right number..

I just bought a new phone and am trying it out for a month, haven't changed my number yet but wanted to move to using Austin's area code. Yesterday I get this call on the new phone

Me: Hello?
Lady on phone: I'd like a Texas king burger with red onions, mayo, no lettuce.
Me:!!!Wrong number!

    you do have terrible luck with this number... maybe you should get it changed.

    Sorry Pree.... this is so damn hilarious... I laughed so hard!

    You know... if I were with you, we could play it out... or maybe you can get enough goop for a short story/novel this way.... just think....

I came across the  power of two choices   theorem recently, it was referenced in a tech talk about schedulers. The central premise of the power of two choices is simple. Yet it is striking in its effectiveness in making decisions about routing requests. The following is my restatement of the premise: You have n options, and a score or rank associated with each of them. You also have an incoming queue of decisions to make about which option to pick. What are your future plans? Why are you *still* a developer?

If I had a nickel for every time someone has asked me that question I'd have enough change for a year? Inspired by my friend's post here , I thought I'd write about how I ended up doing what I do now. Then I thought about it some more and decided to write about something else. Is it important to know where you are going in life? If you aren't moving forward in your career does it mean that you are doing something wrong? What does "moving up the ladder" even mean? I am going to attempt to answer these questions for myself. Its almost 5 years since I began my professional career. It has been great so far, lots of ups some downs as well. My perspective of women in CS

For almost all of my professional life I have been very passionate about this topic. I am on the Anita Borg Institute  mailing list. I read various posts addressing this where they talk about why girls need more encouragement to get involved in CS from an early age and how gender stereotyping in schools is hurting their chances. Programs like  http://www.girlstart.org/  conduct camps and special events to encourage girls in STEM subjects, that I enthusiastically support. I got extremely worked up over this post ( http://techcrunch.com/2010/08/28/women-in-tech-stop-blaming-me/ ). Two years later it still makes me angry. There's no disputing the fact is that there are relatively very few women in this field, both entrepreneurs and working in the industry.
